Sputtering

CPFilms employs the industry's most advanced sputter coating technology. Unlike conventional metallizing processes, sputter coating does not require high temperatures. Because of this, it can be used on a greater variety of materials, and allows CPFilms to deposit virtually any metal, alloy or oxide onto a variety of flexible substrates.

In sputtering, positive ions from gaseous plasma bombard the material that is to be deposited on the substrate, physically ejecting particles from the surface of the target material. These particles bombard the substrate, providing superior adhesion of the material to the target surface. We can produce vacuum coated film products using a variety of films to meet specific performance requirements, such as:

  • Polyester (PET)
  • Polyethylene naphthalate (PEN)
  • Polyimide
  • Fluoropolymers

Among the many applications using sputter coating technology from CPFilms are flexible printed circuits, membrane switches, digital proofing, reprographics, decorative automotive badges, and solar control window films. We provide sputter coating products with the following materials:

  • Metals, including titanium, aluminum, copper, silver, zirconium and others
  • Alloys, including stainless steel, nichrome, inconel and others
  • Oxides, including tin oxide, indium tin oxide (ITO), indium oxide, silicone dioxide and others

The deposition we can achieve in sputter coating allows for a wide range of performance properties:

  • Coating thickness: To 5,000 angstroms
  • Light transmission: 96% VLT to opaque
  • Optical density: 0.15 to 4.0
  • Resistivity: To 0.1 megaohm

Sputter coating is available on film thicknesses ranging from 0.5 mil to 20 mils (12 to 500 microns), in roll dimension widths from 12 to 80 inches (30.5 cm to 203 cm).
